Speed Reading in One Hour: Understanding the Mechanics

The mind is an extraordinarily power in which we only use a very small portion. In this course, “Speed Reading in only One Hour” I will show you how to tap some of that unused power and use it for your personal success in high school, college, and life.

Your brain and mind are capable of understanding from 10,000 to 50,000 units of information every minute; one unit being equal to one word. This information is based upon somewhat old statistics (1980’s). Based on new speed reading technology, as well as strides in brain and mind development, you can probably achieve greater phenomenal reading speeds.

The average high school graduate, when tested, reads about 250 words per minute. The college student reads at about 300 words per minute. But, no matter what your beginning reading speed, don’t worry, it is only the beginning. Imagine what an advantage you will have to be able to read over 100% faster than you had before; the possibilities are limitless.

We receive information through our five physical senses, (touching, tasting, hearing, smelling, and seeing) and by those we make decisions. We make choices and judgments from the factors that our physical senses bring into play. The five physical senses (sight, smell, hearing, taste, touch) are preprogrammed for automatic reaction.

We learn, not only from physical senses, but through various forms of thought. Most thought is conscious in nature. Senses, however, work automatically. An example of an automatic reaction might be: when a hungry teenager smells pizza, he or she begins salivating. What’s taking place is that the sense of smell (called olfactory senses) has automatically delivered a thought, “PIZZA”, to the brain and mind. The thought may be unconscious.

Sensing food is a physical sensation through smell. It is a mental sensation (unconsciously or consciously) through thought. And lastly there is a physical sensation through eating, swallowing, and smiling. To summarize the PIZZA adventure: Brain and mind is where the “action” is taking place. Body is where the “reaction” is taking place.

The brain and the mind hold enormous untapped potential; I’m going to help you tap into that potential through Speed Reading in One Hour, available at www.speedread.org, and I’ll show you how you can succeed in your college life and beyond.

As students get older, the texts we use to teach them get increasingly more difficult. Also, teachers rely more heavily on nonfiction texts to teach higher-level concepts. Further, the skills students use to comprehend nonfiction are different than for fictional texts. Most of us would agree that content area teachers in middle and high schools are much more comfortable focusing on content instruction than on reading and writing processes.

What’s the problem?

For students who struggle with reading, these issues combine to create a common dilemma that teachers observe daily in classrooms around this country. Teachers are faced with middle and high school students who are not equipped to get information from texts. The good news is that teachers have many students who are able to comprehend content area texts in a way that does enhance learning. The “not-so” good news is that classrooms also have a number of students whose struggle with comprehending content material contributes to a reduction in learning.

What’s a teacher to do?

Some content area teachers are skilled in techniques to bridge the gap between reading and learning for students who struggle. For other teachers, this dilemma presents a greater challenge. Of course, the very best advice is for teachers facing this challenge is to work collaboratively to share ideas, practice and model effective strategies, and continue to grow professionally via readings, workshops, and self-reflective practices.

Teachers will continue to grow in their knowledge of best practices and ways to reduce the comprehension gap that exists between skilled readers and those who struggle. However, it is critical that we have immediate access to a few tips that can help reduce daily comprehension challenges students face when reading nonfiction material.

The following menu of ideas will help students comprehend nonfiction texts. Although these tips are geared for students who struggle with texts, they would certainly be helpful for all students you teach.

Look for abstracts (these give a brief summary statement). If no abstract exists, write one for students and/or have them write one. Teacher-generated abstracts usually occur prior to reading, student-generated ones usually occur after reading.

Point out beginning/ending statements or paragraphs. These parts of the text give good clues to: what you will read, author perspective, and conclusions.

Turn headings into questions. Ask yourself “What about…?” Then as you read, look for the answer.

Use post-it notes or highlighters to mark significant information. Point out author tips like bold print words, bulleted items, references to figures, charts, and diagrams. Locating significant information should be demonstrated by the teacher using “think-alouds”. Ability to distinguish between significant details and insignificant details takes practice!

Locate the organizational pattern(s). The basic patterns of organization include (but are not limited to) compare/contrast, time order, description, sequence, and cause/effect. Identifying signal words and phrases is helpful.

Pause and paraphrase. Stopping periodically to check your own understanding is critical. Ask yourself – “What did I just read?”. If you can’t answer quickly, then backtrack to reread. (This goes along with #4 above.)

Write and visualize. Take notes and/or make a visual to organize your thoughts. When you jot down notes, it usually becomes easier to remember information. Also, creating a symbol, design, or graphic organizer can increase understanding.

Narrow the focus. Help students to “un-clutter” complex concepts by focusing on the key topics to organize a section of text. When reading a challenging section in a chapter on animal cells, remembering that the topic is “characteristics” can help the student navigate through the material while staying focused on a narrow topic.

Strategy instruction. Strategy instruction can be done in mini-lessons to increase efficiency for the teacher. Model for students how to utilize flexible strategies such as Cornell Notetaking, Venn Diagrams, or KWL. Teachers who use strategies enable students to interact with challenging texts with greater independence.

Teachers don’t need to become reading specialists in order to help students read nonfiction texts, but they do need to recognize that students who struggle with reading need their help to understand the dynamics of content-specific texts. Students are helped not by having their reading and interpreting done for them, but rather by being provided with tools to increase their access to the classroom reading materials used.

Content-area teachers constantly examine how they make meaningful connections for their students. The menu of ideas shared provides concrete and realistic ways to bridge the gap and make reading less frustrating and more meaningful for students. These tips can help reduce the daily comprehension challenges students face when reading nonfiction material. As teachers assist students to take responsibility for developing good reading skills in all content areas, our classrooms will be filled with more good news!

What is a student’s biggest worry, other than passing their degree? Well ask most students this and I’ll bet the majority of them will say that money is their biggest worry as a student. So as a student, what do you do about this? Turn into an alcoholic… well some might I suppose, but most students will try to find part time jobs, student jobs or even summer jobs to give them that extra bit of income that they need.

So in light of these thoughts, I decided to go and investigate what it is like, how easy it is, how difficult it is for a student to get a part time job. As a young person myself I know plenty of students who have had part time jobs in Leeds, part time jobs in Cumbria, part time jobs in Newcastle and many other places, so I had plenty of research subjects to prey on.

My first port of call was to go on a night out with some of the Northumbria University student jobseekers, which basically translates as a night out where you hardly spend a penny. I’d had plenty of previous experience in this field, but when you are out with a purpose to learn things you never knew about a lifestyle that you are so used to and involved in, it felt pretty different. On my first bit of prey, I dropped into a conversation the question ‘How do you cope for money when you’re in full time education, have rent and bills to pay and more things like nights out and food?’ The response I got wasn’t what I expected, they simply said they don’t cope at times, they have their student loans and they get a weekly allowance from their parents, but it’s still not enough.

By pure coincidence, the next thing I knew I was standing at a bar on Newcastle quayside chatting to a person who was trying to recruit students to take up holiday jobs which can lead to graduate jobs. I wasn’t drunk at this time, so yes it was a real funny coincidence. This person was talking about how it’s so difficult to recruit uni students due to their already hectic schedules. I then actually introduced one of my student friends to this person and to my ultimate satisfaction, I found that less than a couple of hours into this night out, I’d already got one of my friends a part time student job.

We then proceeded to a strange little establishment that I can only best describe as, well… a strange little establishment. I never even knew this place existed, yet there I was partying on down on a dance floor with a man with a withered arm and a woman on what appeared to be a dog lead – they were doing this strange hop along dance move. It was good entertainment to be fair and it seemed to have all the students’ enthusiasm and attention, so it was all good fun. Well in this strange little establishment I started talking to the woman who to my astonishment actually was on a dog lead (fashion accessory i guess), and she was saying about her daughter who had went off to Uni in Leeds and had managed to find part time jobs in Leeds that were relevant to her course which ironically was fashion. This gave me food for thought indeed, so the night went from strength to strength and then before i knew it i was being told it was time to call it a night. So as we all slumped back home in the bright light of the early morning with professionals on their way to work looking at us as if we were some sort of unique and wild species, all I could think about was what could be done to give students a better chance of finding student jobs, holiday jobs, summer jobs, and part time jobs.

The next morning, or should I say afternoon, I went online and started searching for a service that could help with what I am trying to find. Then after a few minutes of browsing I came across a website called www.ukstudentjobs.com, whose motto was ‘Discover new jobs to fit in with your student life’ BINGO! I’d found what I was looking for, a very colourful and artistic little corner of the internet which was dedicated to helping students within the UK to find part time jobs, summer jobs and even graduate jobs. So I would suggest that if you’re a student reading this, give UKstudentjobs.com a go because not only is it an ideal service, the help and support from their support team is second to none.

Michael Wigdor “The Enlightenment Bar”
Help answer the question about student reading
A high school within 25 miles or so of Reading, Pa that will take an exchange student?
Hi everyone. We are hosting for our first time this year and our girl is wonderful. My husband lost his job in a downsizing and we absolutely must relocate for a new one.
The girl has decided to stay with us and her program has given permission.
My husband is considering a job in Reading, PA and I'm struggling to find a school that will accept an exchange student.
Does anyone know anything that can help me?
Any answers much appreciated, thank you!
